On Saturday, March 16, 2019, a protest gathering took place in Athens against the fur industry.
The protest gathering at Syntagma Square lasted about an hour where we opened a banner and were giving leaflets to the public against the captivity, exploitation and slaughter of the animals by the furriers.
Then followed a march across Mitropoleos, Pandrosos, Aeolus, Adrianos, Apollonos and Ermou streets leading to Monastiraki.
The demonstration was dynamic, there were shouting slogans such as: "FURS NEVER AND NOWHERE, FREE THE ANIMALS OUT OF THE CAGES" "FREEDOM TO THOSE WHO ARE IN THE CAGES", "EARTH - LIFE - FREEDOM, FIRE IN ALL SLAUGHTERHOUSES "," ZERO TOLERANCE TO THE INDUSTRY, FREE ANIMALS, FREE AND THE LAND ", and giving leaflets in the people they were looking at.
The march went out of shops selling furs, where slogans were written, slogans were written also outside the KFC.
The correspondence of the people was very encouraging and confirms the fact that the fur industry is maintained and profitable because of the support and subsidies it receives from the state.
We continue the struggle for total liberation of animals and the earth.
Initiative against the fur industry
NO TOLERANCE IN THE FUR INDUSTRY NO TOLERANCE IN THE EXPLOITATION & SLAUGHTER OF ANIMALS
The fur industry is yet another link in the chain of production of systemic violence and exploitation of anything and anyone that can be useful in a sovereign system of power. The exploitation structures are much deeper and are not limited to the exploitation of man by man, who in contemporary capitalism is expressed through the paid work. Closure structures for non-human animals for multiple purposes, all of which result in one, the profit, are the most massive, timeless and more established exploitation structures. Whether we are talking about food, clothing, fun, science, or other artificial man-made or not human needs, non-human animals are considered "objects" and "products" according to the predominant anthropocentric narrative. The fact that animals are sentient beings that feel, dream, love and have desires in accordance with the anthropocentric logic is not a reason for them to be recognized as dignified beings deserving the life of their own.
In particular, the fur production activity encapsulates sentient animals in small square cages, torturing them by incarceration from the first minute of their lives to live horrible lives and eventually find a horrible, slow and tortuous death. The last act of the relentless mastery of the abusers against them is forcing them into an agonizing death by skinning their leather and fur, massacring them alive while animals are desperately crying out for help. A terrible death of unimaginable pain and suffering-just to keep their fur coat shiny and soft for insentient consumers of fur and leather industry. All the pain and suffering that have been inflicted to the animals in this tyrannical life of theirs, has made them lose every right to their life and self-existence.
As far as Greece is concerned, there are 131 fur-industries, that kill approximately 3 million animals per year, in northern Greece and more specifically in the following areas: Prefecture Kastorias 46 farms, 69 Kozani Prefecture, Prefecture Grevenon 10, Prefecture Florina 4, Thessalonica and Viotia by 1. This number has rapidly increased during the years of the capitalist crisis, as back in 2011 the fur-farms were just 43. This was the result of the political choice of governments which, through subsidies, provided an incentive to further develop the fur-sector economy of these regions. This contradiction, where economic development is identified with destruction and further exploitation, characterizes the qualities of the capitalist economic system that its existence presupposes the uninterrupted movement of production and consumption without taking into the account the non-human animals, the environment or having the slightest significance when it comes to meeting real needs. Within this context, the current Secretary of State for Rural Development and Food, Olympia Teliyoridou, who is -far from randomly- elected in well established and famous fur-farming Kastoria region, provocatively demonstrates no trace of empathy for the millions of tortured animals as she states with her own words that the fur industry enjoys "the full support of the Ministry" and arbitrarily exonerates exploitation and skinning by referring to the "legitimacy" of rearing fur animals and the "interest in attracting" an increasing number of investors. A typical example of why reformism has nothing to offer to real needs of today humanity and planet but to preserve the existing false model of civilization and economic status.
We, in no way, recognize that the production of fur or leather is a necessity, something that already under the pressure of the international races against fur is increasingly adopted as a point of view by most in the field of fashion designers. Even more, and regardless of existence or absence of human needs, we have a clear contrast to the logic of sacrificing other sentient beings to serve our own desires or needs. In any case, many additional "deeds" could achieve humanity if they extend to human animals the barbarity that is reserved for non-human animals. For example, medical science may have had far more valid results if it was experimenting with humans on human diseases instead of other animals. However, we do not enter this debate. Any form of oppression, imprisonment, exploitation, and final analysis of any deprivation of freedom of another sentient will be treated by hostility and an end to this civilization model and economic growth it is our goal. Until we are all free. We march against fur-industry
